A Sender ID is what appears on a SMS recipients’ mobile phone to show who the SMS was sent from.

A custom Sender ID usually displays your business name or word associated with your brand name, so recipients can clearly identify that the message has come from your business. On the Live sms platform, custom Sender IDs have a maximum of 11 alphanumeric characters.

Two reasons why you should use a Sender ID:

Branding: Sender IDs are important with help to brand your business. Recipients can easily and immediately recognise your business name making them more receptive to the message you have sent them. They will also recall receiving an SMS from your brand even if they didn’t open the message which can help with brand recall.

Trust: What is your first thought when you receive a text message from a random number? For most people it’s usually that the message is spam, or they’ve got the wrong number.

With a Sender ID, your customers can instantly recognise who the message is from. An SMS from an alphanumeric Sender ID makes your SMS look more professional and shows you have invested in an SMS marketing platform. Alphanumeric Sender IDs cannot be sent from normal mobile phones!

One-way communication:

Using a mobile number as your Sender ID displays the mobile number and allows recipients to respond directly to the SMS. However, this is only advisable for small sends or to contacts you know personally. It’s also worth remembering that if you use your own number every reply will come through to you mobile. Which is not advisable if you have a lot of customers!

When using a Sender ID with alphanumeric characters i.e. your business name, your customers will not be able to directly respond to the SMS. You will instead need to include a call-to-action (CTA) within the message text if you want your customers to respond.
